Does anyone remember the faggot and pea shop in Bolton Road, it was owned by Mrs Adams and you fetched it in a jug with the nicest gravy ever!!! :PAlso the fish and chip shop in Glovers Road, always had to queue, the bakers on the corner of Glovers Road had the best cakes, I think a family called Grimes lived there, went to school with Kathy.
Would love to see some old 'photos of Oakley Road school if anyone has any. Always used to stop at the outdoor and get a wagon wheel when we had 3d to take to school.
The Railway club always had good dances, and the Deritend Ex-service mens club put on some turns. We had everything we needed on our doorstep, if only we had known.

Well thats a trip down memory lane, I remember all of those names very well, used to go to Deritend and the railway club. I waited for the 28 bus outside the paper shop nearly every day, remember standing there one morning and the bus Inspector came down in his car to tell everyone the buses had stopped running due to weather, had to go up the Cov to get a bus.
Had a journey on google maps down Bolton road, could not believe it, were has it all gone...

Hi Carol have just joined forum to see if I could see any old friends from school, I too went to Oakley Road in 1967 to 1971, I remember killer Evans the maths teacher, I used to dread going into his class, he was so intimidating, but so were most of the teachers we used to get caned for anything, I remember being caned for being too quiet in metal work !!!, I can recall some names of school friends, Colin Norman, William Evans, Donovan Currie, Patrick Keen, Mark, Julie, Wendy, Oliver, Terry,
What year was you there? Alan

Hi Ray It was actually South Rd which came under Sparkbrook, I went to Montgomery street school and then Oakley Road Small Heath, I had a friend who lived on bolton road I think is name was Terry Ghost, and he was a brilliant goalkeeper, also other friends who lived in small heath but can not remember where.
Me and my mates we used to be able to sneak into St Andrews and get escorted out by a bobby and then climb back in, we also used to sneak under the turnstiles with the help of true paying fans.
It would be great to get in touch with anyone who remembers me, I was football mad, and not too interested in anything else, I wish I could turn the clock back, and would have taken school more seriously.
Alan ( bluenose till the end)

Alan ( bluenose till the end) Hi Alan,
Bloody'ell another bluenose... Lots of people on this site claim to be a bluenose, but they ain't, they are the Village Idiots from Aston Way, so I will give you a run down on some of the trouble makers:
walt00 [wal] - He worked for Gallagher's Engineering Contractors for about 25 years, knocked down most of Birmingham's finest buildings!
peter42 - pete - Got a nasty chip on his shoulder because he came from Grange Road, but tells everybody he was born in Baker Street [my birthplace] but he was rejected by the 'standards committee' of Baker Street, he's never forgiven them !
berniew - bernie - another Grange Road Peaky Blinder, meet him, shake his hand, count your fingers, I will say no more..
Which brings me to the boss of this forum, Jerry.... What a nice chap, used to sell The Coronet Picture Programme to people with dodgy eyesight, whilst they were queueing up to get into the Grange Picture House, get my drift.... Jerry was, at one time, an 'extra' on the peaky blinders TV programme, but was thrown out when he went around the set selling out-of-date pork scratchings to the cast members........
jhedger - Jan - a real find for for our forum! Took great delight in standing on speakers corner in Brighton, telling all who would listen, about dodgy MPs & councillors! They got the last laugh, banned Jan from Brighton, sent her with an escort [to make sure she left Brighton], and gave her a tent in Shropshire. Last heard of 4 months ago, she teamed up with Jerry, Pete and wal to fight her case, and all were given Asbo's for their trouble!!!!
So amongst others, we are left with bertam_boy, a true gentleman from Small Heath. Another who was inclined to 'tell it the way it is', now living abroad, unable to get back home!
So, we have a dilemma, it's just you and me now Alan, but I'll be watching you......
straight as a die Ray.

Welcome to the forum Alan. Don't take too much notice of Ray's rantings. He always gets cantankerous at weekends when the Blues haven't played and when his tablets are running low!!. We're a friendly crew and there's plenty of knowledge and experience for you to call on should you need it. Don't be shy to let us know your experiences of the Small Heath area

Pete Hi and welcome Alan I see Ray's trying to worm his way in with you. He does that with all the new kids. Have you noticed when you start at somewhere new it's always the kid with no pals who tries to make friends first! Have nothing to do with him mate, he lies like a pig in wossaname. Talking of pigs, there was nothing wrong with them scratchings, they were made from a rare breed of green Irish porkers, hence the colour! When he's finished slagging us off to you ask him what happened to the spire from Little Green Lane School. He still denies everything to this day but for all the photos he's posted here there's one that you won't see. That's the one of him and Wal and Raggy Allan on a Mediteranean cruise shortly after the spire disappeared. I'll say no more!
