Do you remember these? They were "de rigueur" in my early footballing days.
Can't imagine Messi, Suarez or Ronaldo playing in this kit.
......and what about the ball, or "caser" as we knew it? They were as heavy as hell when the weather was wet. You tried your best not to head the thing, especially if you could see that the lace was foremost.
I'd spend hours repairing the inner tube with bicycle inner tube repair kits. Then I'd blow it up with my bike pump, bend the teat over, tie the bend with string, try to force the teat into the outer casing, and finally tie up the casing with an old football boot lace.
The boots and ball then needed to be softened & water-proofed. We couldn't afford proprietary "dubbin" so we lit a tallow candle and let the fat drip onto the boots/ball and then we spent another hour or so rubbing the stuff in! Then over the "Rec" or the "Ritz" for a kick around (and concussion!)
Footballs were valued items in those days. Not so now, judging by the number of them that appear in my garden from goodness knows where!

God .. there were times, the tears have already been rolled over my eyes. And there was not a huge selection of so-called "centipedes" from Adidas freefootball hit or Nike. It's a great idea to describe my thoughts on this as a short essay on essayyoda.com. After all, I remember my first football breeches brought from Germany, for me then it was an incredible dream. Thanks for the memory.
