The Waverley café at the junction of Oldknow Rd and Waverley Rd just opposite the Labour exchange. When passing I never failed to stop for a pork & stuffing sandwich, they were the best in Brum. Attachments:

I wonder when it became the Waverley Cafe. From 1966 to as far back as 1940 it was listed as "coffee rooms" under various owners, the last one being Alfred Smith.

All I know is that it did good sandwiches and the owner was a tall chap who was probably about 50 ish then in the 70/80's I don't recall his name though. Another good café in the area was Georges on the junction of Bordesley Green Rd and Fordrough Lane.

Georges Cafe is another one that goes back to the 1930s under various owners. Before that it was Little Bromwich Social Club. It's still there but now it looks like it's George's Cafe by day and a curry house by night. Not a bad idea really Jerry

An update on that, I've been told it's just a curry house but the owners decided to preserve the cafe name in their sign, which I think is nice

Wow!! Is that REALLY the junction of Waverly Road/Oldknow Road as it looks today Unrecognisable from just 20 years a go - let alone 60! I am genuinely shocked. Well....it looks fairly clean and tidy and...moderm. Glad the current owners retained the old name of the cafe. Hi BB, sorry for the confusion, "Georges Cafe" is the one on the corner of Bordesley Green and Fordrough Lane. I suppose it should be in a seperate thread but the original post by Mac was in the Waverley Cafe thread and I just carried it on from there. You see how neatly I shifted the blame onto someone else there? I should have been a politician Jerry

Well lets confuse things completely by bringing another of the cafes in Small Heath & surrounding area that I occasionally used into the topic. It was on the corner of Golden Hillock Rd & Armoury just by the BSA. This photo here shows in in 1951 when it was Vic's café. I don't know what it was called when I occasionally popped in for a quick bite in the 70's. Attachments:

Well I think I can say with some certainty that I never used this café on Golden Hillock Rd as I have no memory of it at all. The photo dates from 1957. Attachments:

My first job was at the BSA in 1961 and I used to walk past this cafe every day. I went in there once or twice but not often because I used to get a cheap subsidised dinner in the BSA canteen every day.

Another café in Small Heath that I never used, this one was in Whitmore Rd the only other think I remember about the road was it once housed that well known Birmingham construction company Bryants. This is the Sherbourne Café. Jerry if you think it better then rename this thread Small Heath Cafes or even simpler and giving more scope just "Cafes" Attachments:

Another Cafe. The Galaxy, frothy coffee and a good juke box. what more did a young lad need on wet afternoons?

Used to go in there a lot. I remember the pinball machine where they paid cash if you got 4 or 5 in a row. I used to be pretty good at it. I suppose, like snooker, it was evidence of a misspent youth Jerry

The Galaxy was a good caff, mac - bang up-to-date, style-wise.
Taylor's piano shop to its left was a class act, selling really good quality instruments at good prices. The guy who owned it started out with a similar shop at 29 Bridge Street, Walsall.
