Fantastic - love the chronological arrangement Vince. Wow - how it all comes flooding back from looking at these pictures. They were still doing boats on the lake as late as 1975. I took the last one myself, on a nice warm day in 2009. Walked round the park for about an hour without seeing another soul.

I learnt to swim at the open swimming pool. I was about five at the time my brother and his friends would throw us in and then would argue who would save us, so i had no choice but learn to swim, this would about 1932/3

A few years further on I had the same experience in Green Lane Baths. My two older brothers took great delight in chucking me in, I learned to swim underwater long before I learned to swim on top Jerry

Looking back it's amazing how busy they were. Queues around the block for a half hour swimming 'session', then being chucked out half dressed by a Rosa Klebb lookalike in a white coat, while struggling to get socks on wet feet........ My memories of the pool in Small Heath park are of an intimidating pool covered in water lilies - NOT inviting for swimming!

If you are talking about the Lido in Small Heath park then you are giving your age away a bit, as it closed down in 1938 to be replaced by a paddling pool some 17 years later in 1955. Attachments:
