Looking at this old 1872 drawing of Golden Hillock Rd at first I thought the artist had displayed a fair amount of artistic licence in his portrayal of an idealistic country scene. Though when I checked the old maps I discovered that the area was still mostly farmland. Attachments:

I doubt that this photo is much more than 50 years later than the previous drawing as it must have been taken between 1920-30, but just look at the difference. Though there is the fact that the drawing is of the canal bridge and the photo is of the railway bridge Attachments:

The building to the right became The Sydenham Pub.

Hi Eva and welcome. As far as I recall you're our first member from the States. There's been a Sydenham Hotel of one sort or another on that site going back to at least the 1890s. Obviously you've got connections to the area...? Jerry

A couple more images of the Sydenham Hotel one looks to be in the 1920's and the other in the 1960's.

Hi Jerry. Yes, definite ties to the area. On the other corner of Armoury Rd from the BSA was my parents cafe Vic's cafe where I grew up as a child. Next door was Mrs Scrivens sweet shop. My grand parents owned both the sweet shop and the cafe at of 1 point. They sold the sweet shop to Mrs Scrivens and gave the cafe to my parents as a wedding present. I of course wasn't alive but my parents were there during WWII. Had an unexploded bomb through the roof, not 100 percent sure but I it was the same night the BSA was bombed. Fortunately, they were all in the cellar between the cafe and sweet shop.

Hi Eva
I used your parents café many times in the 50's and 60's, I have no doubt you have seen this 1952 photo before.

Hi Jerry, Definite ties. My parents and grandparents before them owned Vics Cafe on the corner of Armoury Rd. My grandparents also owned the sweet shop next door until they sold it to Mrs Scrivens. I went to Golden Hillock Primary School. It's so sad to see all the changes. I guess I now understand how our parents felt about our generation. My name is Elaine, maiden name Porter and have an older sister Gillian who is now in Canada. Btw, my folks used to hide in the cellar in the alleyway between the sweet shop & cafe during air raids. My grandfather went upstairs at the cafe to have his turn to take a nap only to find an unexploded bomb on the bed.

I had this photo for ages and it was tagged as Golden Hillock Road and I could never make out where it in fact was, until somebody told me it was actually looking down Armoury Road from Golden Hillock Rd.
