Some photos of the Circus on Coventry Rd Hay Mills on the early 50's on their way to the recreation grounds at Yardley I have no doubt. The one gives a good view of Bedders fish & chip shop. I haven't been in there since it was sold out, anybody know what it's like now?

On the subject of the circus, an old chap once told me that in the 1920s a lion escaped from a circus somewhere around Camp Hill, was at large for a couple of days till it was found somewhere around Kingston Hill by local kids, captured and returned unharmed to its cage. I didnt really believe it at the time, but then a few years later I read something similar, but cant remember where. Anybody else heard that one ?

A lion escaped from the onion fair at the Serpentine in Aston in 1924 and was caught two days later in the sewers around Bracebridge Street. Maybe the story got "borrowed"?

There were two escapes by lions from the Onion Fair. One in 1899 when it was held in Burbury Street lozells. It was recaptured in the Aston Brook culvert. The second one was in 1924 whilst at the Serpentine grounds and was recaptured using goal nets from the Aston Villa Foootball Club.

Sounds like Aston tit-for-tat: we pinched their FA cup and they pinched our lion story.
