Nice one, Abid, you're a Bertram Road success story! What field of research do you work in?

Hi Abid the living conditions were pretty much the same for anyone who lived in a house around the area no bath and so forth but there was a sense of community that has been lost over the years . You have done extremley well in an academic world that I have never experienced ' not bright enough. Personally I could not abide school and left as soon as I could but you stuck ar it travelled the world and it sounds like you really like what you do , thats some achievment for a lad from the slums of Small Heath . It can only be topped by a picture of Baker Street or a pension the size of Petes

I found your memories fascinating, Abid.
As others have said, it's a similar history for most of us, but yours is from a different perspective. Thanks for posting it.
Pete

Nice one, Abid, you're a Bertram Road success story! What field of research do you work in? Broadly speaking, its biomedical technology as applied to heathcare. With the first patent, we started a company called Affinity Chromatography limted - which was later bought by the Canadian Pharmaceutical company called ProMetic Biosciences. The second company is called SmartHolograms - and we developed a contact lens-based glucose sensor to help diabetics monitor their blood sugar levels at home (without the painful pin pricking to draw blood). At the moment I am involved in developing hand held biosensors for the rapid detection of bacterial and viral diseases. Takes a long time for basic research to get from University all the way to industrial/commercial level - but its been an enjoyable career so far Thanks for that. I did 9 years of research myself in the 60's and early 70's (polymers and surface coatings), and know how exciting it can be, before moving into IT (mainframes) for the remainder of my career. Your work is clearly indebted to the miniaturisation of electronics, something I could have done with all those years ago. Frankly, everything was crude and 'tonka' back in my day, and I well remember the buzz I got when we upgraded from bunsen burners to thermostatically-controlled apparatus! ;D (it really was a different world in those days). Good luck with your projects.

Wal...Pete - thanks guys. I´ll try to put a few pictures soon too. We´ve got a handful of pictures from the Bertram Road era (courtesy of a Polaroid camera that my middle brother bought around 1976). On my next visit home (Birmingham), I will try to scan in some of these pictures from our family album. Hi Abid I dug this up for you, would you believe you posted this in February 2010? Forgive the "diamond" shape, the photo was taken on the skew and I've straightened it up for easier viewing Jerry Attachments:

Here´s another scanned polaroid (apologies for the quality) featuring my middle brother - but you can still see a bit more of Bertram Road. Hello Abid With the exception of your brother, this was exactly the view from our front room, lounge, living room downstairs window Pete
