As a young lad, me and my younger brother Mike, went everywhere on our home made box trolley.
One plank, two pram axles 4 wheels. load of nails and rope for steering, was all you really needed to be mobile.
Now here is the bit I am a little sticky with!
The picture attached is Great Barr Street, approaching the canal, with Liverpool Street left and Fazeley Street Right.
From memory the blue painted railings on the left and over the canal housed an 'Army Surplus' yard where we used to buy bits for our trolley, in particular, I can only describe as a binocular case, that just held our sarny & pop.
Does anyone else remember the Army Surplus Yard?
Ray.

Yes as you go towards the Bridge from Montague St it was on the Right Hand side just passed Montague Street. It changed its name To Reclamations Ltd and started selling second hand Filing Cabinets, Desks, etc, directly across the road was Amphlett Bros.Looking at your picture the White van is just approaching it at the end of the Bridge coming towards Montague Street. Wal.

There was also a premises, either on or near, the NE corner of Great Barr Street/Glover Street, that sold weird & wonderful Army Surplus stuff, back in the 60's. Their wares were so 'fringe' that they never bothered taking them inside at night 'cos no-one would want to pinch them! ;D The wooden boxes they came in were the only things worth having.

Spot on, we were always trying to improve the look of the cart, but at the end of the day, it didn't matter, there were only very basic bits you could lay your hands on.
If you damaged a wheel, you had to find TWO wheels or your cart ran lop-sided!

me and my brother fitted a bike dynamo on the back wheel and rode up and down cattel road pavements in the dark.we used to find some good parts on the big and little tip.remember finding little broken crock ornaments by the cement works. by where the railway level crossing was.we would fin animal furs.which frightened us .as we thought someone maybe going around skinning cats.it was always fun to see what had been dumped on the big tip.old cars to play in. tv's to smash up.

Before my time, but was it Jimmy Chaplins ? He sold fishing tacle, and army surplus stuff like tank aerials, ammo boxes, radio parts and tools and had a few other branches. Big one at Saltley Gate, and Alum Rock Rd, one at the Broadway ( its Stocktons now) and I think another one by Spring Hill Library. Ther was another place in the 60s on Cov but further up, nearly opposite Muntz St that sold those webbing boxes everybody used for lunch boxes and second hand army boots. Stuff like that.

I remember the one on the Cov. I remember my dad buying big gauntlets there to use when he was on his motorbike,
I've looked it up in Kelly's 1962 directory and it's just listed as "Army & Navy Stores" it was at No. 475 which was just before Langley Road going out of town.

The Army and Navy shop i used to go into was where the Upholstery Shop was where the Sunshade is on this old pic. Just before the Bank, on the corner of Regents Park Road. I once bought a pair of Snow Shoes that looked like 2 Tennis Rackets. Of course they were completely useless............ Wal. Attachments:

Jerry Funny what sticks in your mind. The one I'm thinking of was set back, and had a sign outside, at right angles to the road if you see what I mean, that Said 'Mirrors re-silvered'
