Many thanks for that warm welcome, Ray. As I said, I'm from Somerville Rd originally and 3 sisters still live in the same house. I'm now in Hay Mills but still drink in the George and Dragon (since the Monica closed). I was just trying to tie up the Muntz pics with an OS map of Small Heath from 1903, but I might have to consult my brother who is also well up on local history. regards Mick (bluenose too!) Hi Mick,
Attached is a map from 1889, showing Baker Street at the junction with Muntz Street, but, NO Somerville Road ! Will have a look over the week-end to tie-down 16 Muntz Street, but very positive one of the other members will point it out to you before then.
planetmalc will, I believe, point out number 16 Muntz Street, as he lived in Muntz Street !

Wow! I just joined this site within the last hour and already, I'm in seventh heaven! I should be able to pinpoint my cousins' house at no 16 Muntz St (Delaneys). I've just clocked the bus stop where I used to get of the No 8 bus coming back from St Philip's School in Hagley Road. (1967-1972). I lived in Somerville Road. Hi Mick, been looking at Muntz Street, trying to tie- down number 16. Turning into Muntz Street from Coventry Road, on the right about 7 shops down is Revolution Hair Design listed as number 13. Dead opposite is a shop called Chargrilled listed as number 496. At the other end of Muntz Street, the old White Lion Pub is listed as number 152. can you just check that it is number 16 your Delaneys lived. ray.

Ray, again, many thanks for your reply - they definitely lived at no 16, as per the Muntz St listings on this site here: smallheath.proboards.com/thread/4386/muntz-street. I remember going there as a kid (they had a swing and we didn't!). It was definitely on the west side, just down from the Cov. They moved about 1963 ish. I'll show the pic to my brother tomorrow - he's a few years older so more likely to remember. Once again, many thanks - I think I'll be spending a lot of happy hours on this site!

You are correct from the Electoral roll posted by Jerry, so I can only assume the numbers have changed since 1956.
Thats the beauty of history !

I'm just following the numbers on my 1903 OS map - the properties with the # number eg:
63 … Benjamin & Margaret brown 1 # 63 … Dorothy Breakspear 4 # 63 … Michael & Ida Toal 65 … George & Lilian Young 2 # 65 … Harold Hickin 3 # 65 … Frederick & Doris Thomas
are clearly shown as small properties to the rear of the street-front properties. I'll scan it when I can.
Could be a long night!
many thanks.

Hi, Bertram_Boy, Yes - it was plain St Philip's when I was there (1967-1972).
I believe the school became a 6th form college after some serious political disputes about the way it was run by the Oratory Fathers.
If you remember old Father Gregory, he died only a couple of years ago.
There is a group of about 12 of us who are still in touch after all these years and we meet up at least once a year.

Hi, Mick; welcome aboard! It's often a bit tricky trying to match maps with electoral rolls and photo's - and pinpointing #16 is pretty typical of this - but here goes anyway! The Malt Shovel had its own outdoor toilet attached to it, followed by a building with a pointy top, and next to that is another single-storey building with the words 'ASSEMBLY ROOMS' above its doorway. I think the next house was the confectioner's (with 2 upstairs windows) and then came the first entry (reduced to a thick dark line on my photo) with the Delaney's house being the first in a group of 3 properties before you get to the second entry (also visible). The Fleetline bus is standing at the bus stop that you probably used on your way to school.

planetmalc, many thanks for the warm welcome - that description seems about right to my fading memory!
I imagine the gap in numbers from (no 2) is because the pub wasn't built when the houses were. My 1903 OS map shows a gap between the corner property (not shown as a pub) and the first house. I'll see if I can scan that section of the map.
Cheers
Mick

I lived in Somerville Road. Between which two side-roads?

About 100 yards west of Mansel Road, north side.

Did you know the McAllister's (I may have spelt that wrong) who lived just to the right of the wide gully between Somerville & Kenelm? John (born 1942-3) was a classmate of mine at Somerville Road School, and his younger sister Dawn was a regular at the Gondola coffee bar on the Cov, which several of our members used to frequent.

Here's a scan of the 1903 OS map showing a gap between the property on the corner of Coventry Rd and the first house. Full page photo.pdf (1.97 MB)
