From the 17th century onwards thousands of these "Beer Shops" were opened all over the country.
They were the forerunners of the "outdoors" that we knew and some of them also sold beer for consumption on the premises, although records don't say which.
The premises didn't have names and were just listed under the owners name like any other shop
Because they only sold beer most local authorities allowed them to operate without the usual publicans licence, this made it easy for anyone to set up a beer shop in the same way as any other shop.
In 1892 there were about 1500 of these beer shops in Birmingham and over a hundred of these were in Small Heath and Bordesley Green.
Most are long gone but a few went on to become fully fledged public houses.
One thing's for sure, wherever you lived in B9 orB10 in 1892 you was never far away from an "Offie"
