In conversation last night and it came around that a true 'Cockney' was born within the sound of Bow Bells.
Scratching my head I was trying to ascertain what defined a true 'Small Heathen'
There are probably dozens of sayings we could attach to this, but my own is:
If you have pushed a three wheeled pram down Bordesley Green Road, over Ash Road, right along Adderley Road, left over the
Viaduct then right into Nechells Place and into the Coke Yard......
Then with said Coke loose in pram or in a sack, turn around and push the damn thing back home, mostly uphill, you are 'A TRUE SMALL HEATHEN' !

Hi Jed, The queue was people with prams etc, waiting to get into the Coke yard for their Coke, from the Gas Works at the bottom of Nechells Place.
Ray.

Here´s another definition (circa mid 1970´s): You know you were from Small Heath when your dad worked in Lucas and got paid 9 pounds a week (and some pence) in those small wage packets. The height of excitement came on Saturday morning with a trip to Tesco´s on Coventry Road (just past the Grange Road junction), followed by a quick wander in Woolworth´s next door, then to pay the electric bill in the MEB shop (still accompanied by your dad mind you) - then the walk back home past Butler´s steam boiler on the corner of Grange Road/Baker street. Just in time to turn the B&W TV on to catch the last bit of Tiswas and the start of World of Sport (with Dickie Davies). Wrestilng at 4 o´clock: Big Daddy vs Giant Haystacks. And Jackie Pallo and Shirley somebody...... Ray.

I have heard ithat its if you could hear the roar of the crowd on a saturday afternoon. But woulnt that inclue Bordesley, and some of Saltley ?
It would also exclude the posh people who lived in Birmingham 10

Hi Vince,
That's the problem with 'old sayings', are they genuine, where's the 'boundary', who proclaimed the 'saying', I just think it's a local thing that was passed down the generations, where these myths / sayings come from is / was lost in time.
Ray.

Hi Wal,
Spoken to the adjudicating panel, and yes, Regent Park Road was classified as Small Heath, but the AREA, not the locals, apparently all who lived down Regents Park Road were teetotal.
Sorry,
Ray, Jerry, Pete and historical genius, Joe.

Thanks for remembering the full name Jan. Wikipedia says: "Shirley Crabtree, Jr, better known as Big Daddy (14 November 1930 – 2 December 1997) was an English professional wrestler famous for his record-breaking 64 inch chest. Known for wearing his various Big Daddy leotards, Crabtree's original garment was emblazoned with just a large "D" and was fashioned by his wife Eunice from their chintz sofa." Born and died in Halifax, Yorshire. Vince - B10 posh ?? Maybe in the 1920´s....and even then! We could indeed hear the roar of a goal on Saturday afternoons emanating from BCFC (on the rare occasion the team actually scored). But you ´d have to be either in the garden, or out on Bertram Road to hear it properly. Actually I meant the area around the park, and the posh kids at Waverley Rd. But if the cap fits Bertram_Boy, you said recently your old man earned £9 a week at Lucas'. That was posh peoples money. When we were kids we were so poor we couldnt afford coal. When it got too cold the old man would suck a Polo, and we'd take it in turns to warm our hands on his breath.
