George Street Balsall Heath Birmingham c. 1975
This picture and 4 other pictures in this thread, show run down housing in and around Balsall Heath, BUT, these conditions were to be found in most areas of Birmingham around this period, although 'Slum Clearance' was starting to operate on an industrial scale.

While taking a virtual tour of Small Heath, I came across this shocking scene looking into Park Grove, just off the Wordworth Road/Charles Road/Coventry Road junction. The picture was recorded in July 2012. What on Earth is going on ?? Was there a strike by the bin-men ? Why did someone just discard a mattress on the street ?? This is absolutely unacceptable behaviour. sorry - can´t seem to be able to embed the image from google street view. Hi bertram_boy, Intrigued by your post, I had to look and found on the street view pictures, dozens of refuse sacks were evident, but if you took the picture alongside the mattress leaning against the wall, there was in fact, six of them as in the attached picture. This, amongst others, was my reason for leaving my hometown, and settling into Worcester. So, so sad, but if people put up with that kind of practice, it will/is only going to get worse!
Ray.

It's not just inner city areas where this is happening; recently there was a mattress dumped in the street outside a nice block of flats nearly opposite Hall Green College and it was there for days.
