Went for the first time to Brum on the train from Wales - on Saturday - met my friend from Bexhill - who had come up to set up the wardrobe - for Tom's Midnight Garden at the Old Rep. Could see the plans coming together for the new New st station - but was a bit lost! Lol! Came out and ahh familiarity! Met my friend at her hotel and went 'show shopping' with her - 'Is there a market' she said - 'a market said I - come with me!' So off we went - me giving a running commentary on 'how it was!' We avoided the actual Bull Ring shopping centre as we both agreed - (both of us having been before) it was a place of entrapment! Once in you can't find a way out! In to the Rag Market and my friend - being a seamstress was in awe! We found what she wanted quite easily - and she bemoaned the fact that the South is to posh for markets like this! Lol
Out and into St Martins cafe for tea and cake - very nice - my daughter was Christened there and of course my story 'Lost Years' is based in that 'old area'. Up New St - Corporation St - me still being a tour guide - and through Great Western Arcade - stunning place! (Pointed out the red brick further down Corporation St first - of course!) Along Colmore Row and like the rest of the city centre - it was festooned with barriers -turned out it was going to be the Christmas Parade that evening! Town Hall Square was buzzing and busy! Entertainment and all sorts - including Reindeer! They were gorgeous! Cute babies too! We dodged round the crowds and went to Symphony Hall - for a warm - it was freezing! Out and over the canal - once we had defrosted! Scrummy meal at the Hand Made Burger and real chips place! On way back - we saw the tail end of the parade - such a bonus we hadn't planned it! There were camels too! Reindeer and camels in Brum! I showed Lesley The new refurbished Town Hall - I love that place as a venue - they have done a magnificent renovation without - this time - detracting from the original!
Talking of which - we both (although we often don't like modern architecture) like the new library - very stylish - good job Brum!
Then it was goodbye and the train back and Lesley back to her hotel. All in all a great afternoon/evening! I loved the buzz of crowds and busyness - hustle and bustle - and memories - but it was nice to get home!
