Lawson Street no longer exists, it's now part of lawley Middleway. It converged with Garrison Lane and Great Barr street so I'm assuming that this rec. was what is now Garrison Lane Park. Jerry

Jerry,
You are in the wrong place, Lawford St Park is now covered by the West Midlands Fire Service Headquarters on Vauxhall Rd. It's central to this early OS map. The later street map locates it better so I include that as well. It was still a park in the early to mid 60's. Attachments:

Hi Mac Thanks for that. It'll teach me not to make assumptions. I'd never heard of barracks Street and I never knew there was a barracks in that area. You live and learn Jerry

Jerry,
The barracks are long gone now they were replaced by the Ashcroft Estate just prior to the last war. About half way up Windsor St, I remember there was a bit of a park with some gravestones in it. Often wondered how they came to be there considering there was a Warks Regiment Barracks there for years.
Anybody know anything ?

Vince
The gravestones belonged to the parish of Ashted Church, St James the Less. The church originally was a house built for Dr John Ash one of the founders of Birmingham General Hospital. Ash never lived in the property and eventually moved to London. It was later owned by a Birmingham attorney John Brook who had a tower added and converted it to a church.
The church was bombed out during the war trapping people in the crypt as it was used as a local bomb shelter, the rest of the church was demolished in the early 60's and the tombstones (at least some of them) were laid flat as you see them today. Attachments:

I wonder if its the building you can just see in the background on the pic in post #5. Yes it was just the other side of the road from the barracks.
