The shop with the name "J. T. Kinchin" above the window was No.32 Greenway Street. It was long closed when this photo was taken. It was listed in Kelly's Directory in 1956 but not in 1962 so it it closed some time in between. I can't find any mention of the Sky Blue garage next to it but the latest kelly's Directory that I've got is for 1966 so I'm guessing the photo dates from c1970. Does anyone remember the shop or the garage? Jerry

Jerry your photo has to be between 1967 & 1974 because the Sky Blue Garage doesn't sh0w up in Kelly's until 1967/68 and by 1973/74 it has gone. Also I have the same photo in my collection dated 1967 though I have learnt never to rely on dates given with photos.

Although I think old man Kinchin still lived there in the early 70s. 1969 or 70 is about right for the garage I reckon. But it would have been there a while before that - when did phone numbers change from the Vic prefix to 772 ?? Should be a clue in that... Somethings telling me there was a boot polish manufacturer there in the early 60s

Hi Vince. Your right about the polish makers. they were Richard Brown & Sons at No. 34 and like Kitchins they were listed in 1956 but had gone by 1962. They were listed as furniture polish manufacturers but they may well have made boot polish too. Kitchin's was just listed as a shop in the 1956 Kelly's, type of shop not specified but in the 1946 Kelly's it's listed as a greengrocers.

He lived opposite Kinchins till the early 60s and used to know them I think.

My friend Lesley Kinchin lived there, and I went inside the premises in the early 60's when it was a domestic residence only.
