These shops and Garfield Place were between Bordesley Green Road and Norwood Road. . This is the same spot now, what a mess. Note to Birmingham Council: If you knock something down you should build something better to replace it. To knock down shops and houses and replace them with advertising hoardings is shameful. Jerry

Why didn't they leave the houses, shops etc, and do the buildings up insteading of pulling them down..

I'm with you on that Kath. Looking at Garfield Place it looks like they had some sort of greenhouse in the front garden. They'd call that a gazebo nowadays Jerry

I suppose the reason for the name of this shop on the corner of Blake Lane has something to do with the fact that the Elite cinema was opposite on the corner of Churchill Rd. Attachments:

Here's the same two sites today. The Era is long gone, replaced by a garage but the other site is almost identical.

more nice pics Mac. Have you got any pics of Grange Road and/or its side roads? They are very few and far between, I've only got about four shots of parts of Grange Road, it would be great to have some more on the site.

Sorry but it seems that photos of Grange Rd are in short supply and the only ones I have are similar to the ones already posted here, but I will keep an eye open for more.

Here we have a photo of Walter Howe's Ironmongers shop, an ironmonger of the old school. The kind of shop that you could buy one coach-bolt or one wing-nut instead of half a dozen affixed to a polythene covered card leaving five you would never use.
The shop was at 619 Bordesley Green up near the Belchers Lane junction and the premises are now owned by St Peters Church on Belchers Lane and have been converted into a café that is called the Crossover Café Attachments:

Most things use 2 or 4. Is that great marketing strategy or what ?

What about our own similar store, The Grange Trading Company at 160 Muntz Street on the Grange Road corner. I remember our daad sending me down there for stuff regular Like the other hardware shops of the time you could buy just what you needed, they'd even weigh you out a couple of ounces of loose nails or screws. Can't find any photos.

This location on Bordesley Green is a continuation of the shops depicted in post #11 going toward Blake Lane, it looks as if Jim Plumley prospered for a while and later closed. Does anybody know if he moved to other premises or did he close down? Attachments:
