Hi, please help, I am researching a racing driver called Ken Miles and am trying to determine which used car sales in Small Heath he might have worked at in late 1951. Apparently the used car sales was a compound type pitch on a bombed out site. I have been told it might have been Coronet Motors on Coventry Road, was that still a bomb site in 1951? Any ideas, perhaps someone here knew Miles. It was a long time ago though. Paul

Hi,I lived in Green Lane as a child and know that the swimming baths was rebuilt in 1951 following bombing. I seem to recall that just below the baths was a used car sales business so that may have been on a bomb site,The name seems familiar to me to.

Coronet Motors did have a site on Coventry Rd at 431-435 but I'm not sure when this was. They were between Henshaw Rd and Cyril Rd I believe this site could have been a site that was bombed out during the war. They later moved up the road a little to the corner of Whitmore Rd I know they were there in the 70's, I don't believe this was ever a bomb site, though perhaps people that lived a little more local than myself may know better.
You can just see Coronet Motors to the left of this photos but this is later than the 50's. Attachments:

I'm sure there were two similar sites, not far apart in the late 50s/early 60s. As kids we used to play in the cars, which were never locked when the places were closed. Pretty sure one of them sold caravan as well as cars.

Hi,
does anyone here have any ideas how I can find out for definite if a Mr Ken Miles definitely worked at a used car sales in Coventry road in 1951? Perhaps someone might have a Kelly`s directory for 1951. Maybe someone knows someone who also worked at the car sales in 51? Any ideas?

Paul
The nearest Kelly's I have is 1950, in that there are car sales at 345-347 Barts of Birmingham and 487 Prospect Motors. Kelly's does not always give proprietors names and I have never known them give employees names.

Theres this place, opposite The Brighton. Picture is dated 1954, so well before my time and I cant make out the name. Come to think of it there was another used car place opposite Chapman Rd.

Sorry cant enlarge it, its been on the forum before though so someone might have a better copy. There were at least two more that have not been mentioned yet, one opposite the end of Chapman Rd - I have seen a picture but dont have a copy - and Ashley Garage, which was at 110 Coventry Rd. I'm not sure if they would be what you would call Bombuilding lots though. Also I have a feeling I have seen photo of Grays, which was a motorcycle dealer nearer the park, with cars for sale on a site at the side of the premises.

Assuming no change of ownership in the 2 years following the taking of the photo, Jerry's 1956 Coventry Road listing tells us that the nearest premises is that of Auto Sales (Birmingham) Ltd., (#363 - 367), and the one abutting the building with the Cave's advert on its side is that of Walter Bradford, at # 369 - 373.

Sorry for the late reply, thanks for coming up with two more used car sale plots. Was this part of Coventry Road heavily bombed? I don`t think I am going to get to the bottom of which car sales in Coventry Road Ken Miles worked at in 1950/51 which is a shame. I shall mention it book though. Thanks all. Paul
